Here is a great way to seed the world with new flowers and herbs. Make seed paper and seed cards to give to friends and family and even business associates for a truly green experience!
Once you have made a seed card or paper (and have given it to a special person), tell them just to tear up the paper over some nice loose dirt, cover lightly with more dirt and water. Keeps this rather damp until sprouting occurs.
Items you will need:
3 or 4 sheets of your favorite color of card stock, newspaper, tissue paper. (use different shades for more interesting color in the final product)
A piece of off white card stock.
1 teaspoon Cornstarch.
A package of herb or flower seeds or herb seeds.
A hole punch.
Fine twine or ribbon 1 teaspoon of cornstarch, An inkpad in your favorite color, A garden related rubber stamp.
A blender and a mesh screen. You can also added dried herbs, rose petals or any other dried herb to make the paper even more attractive.
How to make the seed card:
Tear the colored card stock into strips, and place them in your blender. Add enough water to cover the strips.
Add the cornstarch to the mixture and blend on high until it’s well mixed. When your done mixing you can add some extras if you’d like to add some interest to the card, you can add some dried leaves, seeds, or pressed flowers to the mixture.
Pour pulp into a strainer, and very gently squeeze the mixture to get out the excess water. Mix in your seeds gently. Then pat the mixture onto a screen in the desired shape. Pat the top with a paper towel to get more moisture out, and place in front of a fan, or heat duct to dry. Setting the screen up on a cooling rack will help circulate the air under the card, and speed the drying process even more. Drying the mixture as quickly as possible is the key to preserving the seeds.
When your seed card base is dry, cut a top card in the desired shape out of the off white card stock. You can also tear the card stock to give it a rougher edge. Glue the cut out card stock to the top of the seed card.
You can decorate your card with the rubber stamp, write a personal message, or add some pressed flowers. When you’re finished punch a hole in the top of the card to add a decorative ribbon tie and add it to your packages, with instructions on how to use the seed card and what flowers or plants it will grow.
